Thursday June 18, 2009 - Cabbage Key, FL Today was our easiest day of the
whole trip as far as mileage.
We arrived at Cabbage Key just before 2 pm and were greeted by Dockmaster Jeff, who instructed us to dock on the north side docks. Both Jeffs tied the boat up and plugged it in while I started making calls and e-mails to the local press. I had no luck finding any media who could make it to the barrier island, however, I did arrange Friday morning’s interview in Captiva while Capt. Jeff plotted our course to there. I then checked in with Macy at the hotel as she showed me room #1 where we’d be owners, Ken and Rob’s guests. They were kind enough to give us complimentary room that had not only a charming island décor with a fireplace (that I tried to talk Jeff into lighting - but he’d have no part of it) but also a gorgeous waterfront view of the marina to easily see our boat. Jeff and I had left the boat open in case someone wanted to go for a ride and went up to the room to freshen up a bit before dinner, when all of a sudden we noticed the wind picking up.
We quickly returned to the boat to move the boat to a leeward side slip and lower the conversion top. The winds strengthened to tropical storm force! Docking a boat in strong winds can be challenging, however, the Endeavour handled it well without incident. Electric motors have instant torque, from the moment you turn them on.
When everything was secured, I ran up to get the camera to record this storm. We did some filming and then returned to the lodge to watch and wait out the high winds and rain.
Hours later after the storm passed we then we’re able to relax and have a very enjoyable evening. We had dinner in the “money room” with the ceiling covered with dollar bills. We both had a delicious, freshly prepared seafood dinners overlooking huge Banyan trees and all the natural flora of the island, a few beers and a very peaceful night sleep.
This was EndeavourGreen's first stop at Cabbage Key. It won't be our last. Friday June 19, 2009 - Cabbage Key to Ft. Myers
We're on our way again and still getting lots of
waves and peace signs from everyone we pass!
We need to make a short detour and pick up Ella and Vandy of the Sanibal Captiva Islander. The local newspaper was interested in what we were doing and talking to people is what we're here for, spreading the word about Electric Boats, WhatAboutBlue.org and Sustainable Green Living in general.
The newspaper interview in Captiva has taken us off course a total of 6 miles but it was well worth it for the extra exposure for What About Blue (which BTW, the assignment photographer said she had already heard about WAB - Go Kevin!) and of course our boat.
Heading up the Caloosahatchee River, the Cape Coral Bridge is in the distance as we reel in Ft. Myers. CLICK TO CONTINUE TO FT. MYERS - CLICK HERE TO RETURN TO MAP |
